| News: Cyber Attack on Cigar Websites |
|
This is an exerpt of an e-mail sent by the president of Famous Smoke shop, Arthur Zaretzky.
"Many of our customers have been wondering why our websites have been slow or inaccessible for the past five days. The problem was due to a targeted Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack, similar to what has recently been happening to some large government websites, financial institutions, and e-commerce sites in the U.S. and abroad.
These attacks occur when a flood of traffic is deliberately sent to a particular website in an effort to overwhelm the site and prevent legitimate users from getting through. This is exactly what occurred over the last five days to famous-smoke.com and to some of our competitors in the premium cigar industry. WE ARE NOW BACK, and I have taken steps to ensure that this cyber terrorism will never happen to Famous Smoke Shop again.
Although the attackers were successful in generating enough traffic to bring our websites down, we were not ‘hacked,’ and all of your personal data has been, and continues to remain, secure because of the deliberate targeting of our industry, and the scale and duration of the attack, Federal authorities have taken an active interest in pursuing the attackers and we intend to cooperate fully.”

Disposable Cigars – The New Rage in Cigars
Smoke one and just throw the butt away!
May 18, 2009 5/18/2009 06:20 PM GMT (TransWorldNews)
Disposable is all the rage these days, from disposable razors and cameras to disposable diapers and dishes. Cigars International is proudly jumping on the bandwagon with its novel concept of “disposable cigars.” So popular is this idea that every single cigar boasts this feature. Here’s the way it works: each cigar is intended for one-time use only, so after smoking enjoyment ceases the remainder of the cigar is simply extinguished, then cast aside. Dan ‘The Man’ Haab, one of CI’s in-house IT geeks, practically beams when he proclaims in true tech-speak “this is not a bug, but a feature” of the cigar. Green types laud the reduced cleanup while worry warts rejoice about the reduced anxiety associated with their cigars becoming lost or damaged post-smoking. Even though disposable cigars are a single use item, quality and flavor are still of utmost concern. Thus certain lesser brands tend to be “disposed of” far sooner than others. In fact some cigars are hastily, and somewhat disdainfully, disposed of after a mere glance.
Responding to this phenomenon, dozens of cigar manufacturers have now joined the effort and the selection of disposable cigars has reached unprecedented levels. To date, top-selling cigar brands such as Rocky Patel, 5 Vegas, Gurkha, Padilla, Ashton, Perdomo, Cohiba, Padron, Nub, ACID, CAO and many others are available with the fancy disposable feature.

| News: Famous Smoke Shop announces new Conuco cigars made by Rocky Patel |
|
Source: transWorldNews
Easton, PA 3/12/2008 12:00 PM GMT
(TransWorldNews)

Famous Smoke Shop has just announced the release of Conuco, a new exclusive boutique cigar blended and manufactured in concert with Rocky Patel, one of the leading personalities in the world of premium cigars.
The cigars are handmade under Rocky Patel's direction in Danli, Honduras. The blend comprises carefully-aged Honduran and Costa Rican Ligero, Nicaraguan Viso, and Panamanian Seco longfiller tobaccos bound in a Nicaraguan Seco leaf and wrapped in a milk chocolate-hued, Honduran Habano wrapper.
"Our goal, as always, is to bring value into an inflated boutique marketplace to let the premium cigar smoker know that taste and complexity doesn't need to cost eight bucks a cigar," said Famous Smoke Shop president, Arthur Zaretsky.
Pronounced "koh'-noo'-koh," Conuco is derived from an old Cuban word that refers to a small plot of land an estate owner would grant deserving workers to cultivate their own tobacco crops for profit.
According to Gary Korb, chief copywriter and one of Famous Smoke Shop's resident cigar authorities, "Conuco is a medium to full-bodied cigar with a sweet and complex character." He added that "the cigar offers plenty of earthy, caramelized flavors with hints of dark roasted coffee and cocoa in the aroma."
The cigars are presented in boxes of 20, ranging from $71.99 for the 5" x 44 Petite Corona, $95.99 for the 6" x 60 "Sixty". 5-packs of each size are also being offered. Those interested in more information may visit the Conuco cigars page on the Famous Smoke Shop website, or call 1-800-564-2486.
"Someone once said, 'an educated consumer is our best client,'" said Mr. Zaretsky. "Service, value, and knowledge is what we bring to our customers, and we are always grateful for that opportunity."

| News: 'Little' cigars may be taxed |

'Little' cigars may be taxed
CONCORD – Those who smoke little cigars may soon have to pay state taxes on them.
The House of Representatives voted, 187-136, to endorse legislation that alters the definition of a cigarette in state tax law to govern these so-called cigarillos.
State Rep. William Hatch, D-Gorham, said it's not fair these items are not taxed.
"This effectively closes a loophole that companies are using to sell cigarettes as cigars to avoid taxes that are on cigarettes," Hatch said.
But Rep. Steve Vaillancourt, R-Manchester, said cigars are not taxed and it's unfair to single these out.
"Calling a cigar a cigarette does not make a cigarette," Vaillancourt said. "If you really ought to be honest, you ought to tax all cigars."
Opponents also noted the federal government does not tax these items. The measure now heads to the State Senate.

| News: Heineman approves statewide smoking ban (Nebraska) |
|
Source: KHAS-TV.com
(2/26/2008) By David Ernst - Governor Heineman signed a state wide smoking ban into effect Tuesday. That means beginning in June of 2009 nobody will be allowed to light up in places like bars or restaurants.
The legislature approved the measure last week. Cities and counties will not be able to opt out.
The governor was not sure if he would sign the bill, but in the end decided in was in the best interest of everyone in Nebraska.
"In weighing the merits of this bill I took in the valid concerns of local control and the rights of business owners as well as the health concerns and the rights of the public to clean indoor air. The public health concern is a critical one and that is why I signed LB 395," said Heineman.
According to the American Lung Association, Nebraska is the 22nd state to pass a state–wide smoking ban.

Smoking ban: A step toward communism
SOUTH SIOUX CITY -- The smoking ban legislation being rammed through the Iowa Legislature is another step toward communism. Consider that socialism, as defined, is the intermediary between capitalism and communism. Government control and administration of all property (public and private) is a principle of communism. Bars, restaurants, hotels and casinos are examples of privately owned, commercial property. Yet, the Iowa Legislature and its willing cohorts in the media commonly refer to them as “public places.” I suppose, to announce a smoking ban in all privately owned, commercial establishments (including casinos) would not sell very well.
Moreover, the socialist Democrats claim they are protecting the health and safety of the public. This is based on anecdotal evidence and quack scientific theory that secondhand smoke will cause cancer. Correlation does not mean causation.
The United States fought many bloody battles in order to preserve its freedoms and liberties. Now, socialist Democrats are dishonoring the patriots of freedom and undermining the foundations of our country. Where are the Republican defenders? Have the Democrats beat them into submission? I thought there would be more of an outcry from the business community.
So much for defending property rights, we are about to give up a big chunk of it. -- Joe Reitman

| News: Council sparks fury as it becomes first in Britain to ban smoking outside pubs |
|
Now this is just insane! We all know that it only takes one town, city, state, or country to initiate a domino effect global epidemic. I hope this does go to court, and I hope it is overturned and this ban is barred. Seems California set the pace when smoking on some beaches was banned. One could speculate that ban paved the way, but the below story, in my opinion, directly targets smokers and eliminating their rights to smoke outdoors. I guess non-smokers who are now able to comfortably enjoy their meal or drinks don't like the fact that they now have to enter the establishment via a cloud of smoke, one that exists only because smokers were driven outdoors! Many business and the Department of Defense ban smoking within 50 feet of doors; I suspect that may be pursued in such cases as these as well.
Source: UK Daily Mail
The first town in Britain looks set to ban smoking outside pubs and cafes but furious landlords have vowed to fight the extreme council plans.
Bar and cafe owners have said they are prepared to go to court if the local authority's decision to ban smoking on pavements outside their businesses goes ahead.
By April, smokers in Barnsley, South Yorkshire may find there are few places where they can light up.
Under the new regulations smoking will only be allowed outside in private beer gardens.
The move has caused uproar among the town's licensees who have seen trade dwindle since the indoor smoking ban came into force.
Publican Paul McNicholas, chairman of the town centre Pubwatch scheme said: "I feel so strongly about this I would be prepared to go to court.
"There is no other place in the country even contemplating it. It would be difficult to enforce."
Mr McNicholas has spent £9,000 on awnings, tables and heaters so customers can sit outside his Irish pub and enjoy a pint and a cigarette.
He said: "Having the outside area has compensated me and evened things out since the smoking ban.
These new guidelines could be the difference between bars surviving and not."
Walkabout bar manager Greg Harding said: "I think it is ridiculous."
He has a street drinking area in front of the town-centre premises and was offered the lease of the land by Barnsley Council.
He said: "It gets people out front and brings a bit of colour to the town. This rule would make it untenable for us to continue taking this space from the council."
Barnsley Council's environment department came up with the scheme in a document entitled "Guidelines for street cafes" in Barnsley town centre.
The new rule states: "As of April 1 the licensed cafe area will be a no-smoking area.
"It will be the responsibility of the applicant to ensure that customers are reminded of this.
"If it is noted that on three separate occasions customers are witnessed to be smoking, then the licence will be revoked."
Councillor Roy Miller, Barnsley's environment committee head said consultations were still taking place and input would be welcomed from licensees.
He said: "We are awaiting the responses and I am having a meeting with several landlords."
The move has been attacked by the pro-smoking organisation FOREST which says the scheme is "dubious, difficult to enforce and a potential death knell for businesses without space for a beer garden."
Director Simon Clarke said: "It is the first time we have heard of such a plan anywhere in the country.
"If the council wants smokers off the streets it would be more productive to use resources for smoking rooms.
"If this is brought in I will come to Barnsley myself and light up even though I don't smoke."

TAMPA, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The Isla de Cuba Group, a Tampa-based cigar manufacturer and seller of premium cigars, today announced they are launching an old Havana classic cigar to the U.S. market – Isla de Cuba.

Ramirez has held senior retail, in-house and field sales positions, and has over 25 years experience in the premium cigar industry.
“The Isla de Cuba brand is based on the legendary 1956 MontecristoTM #3,” said Lieser. “I’ve been a cigar lover for a long time, and the Isla de Cuba cigars are a special blend that I’ve had made exclusively for me and my friends for years. Everyone that tries an Isla de Cuba cigar loves it, and I’m ready to share these fantastic blends with the rest of the world.”
Manufactured in Central America, each Isla de Cuba is hand made using a proprietary combination of wrappers, binders and fillers, which gives the cigars a unique, smooth creamy body when enjoyed. “The initial response from tobacconists across the country has been fantastic. True, old-school tobacconists know a high quality premium, hand-rolled cigar when they try one,” added Lieser. “Everyone who has tried Isla de Cuba wants to make it the newest addition to their humidor.”
Headquartered in a historic 103-year-old cigar factory in Tampa, Florida, Isla de Cuba Group, www.IslaCigar.com, manufactures, markets and distributes high quality premium cigars.
